English Dept. Celebrates Writing with Dinner and Conference

OREGON CITY - The English Department at Clackamas will celebrate writing with two events at the end of May: the annual fundraising dinner that will honor Mark Twain, and the Compose Creative Writing Conference.

The conference will kick off at 7 p.m., Friday, May 30, with the second annual English Department fundraising dinner. This year's event is dedicated to Mark Twain and will include a catered dinner, music, raffle and silent auction, as well as readings by English Department faculty and professional actor Bruce Burkhartsmeier. Cost is $25 for students and $50 for others. 

Money raised will support the English Department in its efforts to create and sustain an associate of science degree in English with four focus areas including literature, creative writing, publishing, and comics.  The department will dedicate scholarship funds for talented students who may not otherwise be able to attend college. 

The Compose Creative Writing Conference will take place on Saturday, May 31, at CCC's Oregon City campus in Roger Rook Hall, with check-in beginning at 9 a.m. Workshops include fiction, poetry, playwriting, memoir, comics, songwriting, creative nonfiction, digital storytelling, grammar and publishing. 

The keynote speaker at this year's conference is Sean Davis, author of "The Wax Bullet War." Notable presenters include legendary songwriter Pete Krebs; Diana Schutz of Dark Horse Comics; Jeff Baker, literary critic for The Oregonian; and award-winning authors Kevin Sampsell, Jamie S. Rich, Matt Love, Jay Ponteri, Joanna Rose and Perrin Kerns. English Department faculty presenters include Sue Mach, Dave Mount, Taylor Donnelly, James-Bryant Trerise, Trevor Dodge, Sue Peznecker, Nicole Rosevear, Jaime Wood and Marlene Broemer.

The cost for the conference is $10 for CCC students and $15 for the general public.
