CCC: News ReleasesStudent Leaders Work to Raise Awareness on ElectionThu, 14 Jan 2010 16:12:29 GMT Student leadership at Clackamas Community College is planning a week of events aimed at raising awareness among students about Measures 66 and 67. On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the Associated Student Government will sponsor a referendum debate, featuring four CCC students, who will debate what a yes and no vote may mean to the community and to education in the state. The debate begins at noon in the Community Center mall at the college’s Oregon City campus. Following the debate, CCC board member Chuck Clemans and Courtney Wilton, vice president of College Services, will answer students’ questions about what the Jan. 26 election outcome will mean to CCC. On Thursday, Jan. 21, an open forum for students will be held in the Community Center from noon to 1 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns around the election and the ballot measures. The ASG has been encouraging students to register to vote since fall term and has registered 100 new voters. “I think it’s incredibly important for students to be involved in the community around them. If they’re not going to take part in the process, they’re leaving the decision making up to others,” said Alyssa Fava, ASG president. Fava is a 2008 graduate of Rex Putnam High School in Milwaukie. She is completing a transfer degree at CCC and plans to transfer to Oregon State University and study philosophy. For more information, contact Mindy Brown at 503-657-6958, ext. 2250. |
