OREGON CITY - The field of health sciences is currently in demand and growing. The need for certified nursing assistants is especially strong. Clackamas Community College offers several certificate and degree programs in the health sciences for individuals to fill this demand.

For those interested in pursuing nursing, the college is hosting two certified nursing assistant (CNA) information sessions. The first will be Wednesday, April 17, from noon to 1 p.m., and the second will be Wednesday, April 24, 5 to 6 p.m. Both sessions, which will introduce the CNA program and a tour of the on-site nursing lab, will be held at the CCC Harmony Community Campus, 7738 S.E. Harmony Road, Milwaukie.

Students who successfully complete the 11-week training will learn the skills to perform basic-level nursing care. Certified nursing assistants are defined by law as people who assist licensed nursing personnel in the provision of nursing care. This course is approved by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

Instruction content includes:

  • Introduction to health care facilities
  • Communication
  • Basic body structure and function
  • Patient needs
  • Preventing infection
  • Body mechanics

Certified nursing assistant graduates will be considered for hire by local health care facilities, and graduates earn on average $15.81 an hour/$34,407 annually.

"Clackamas Community College goes the extra mile to get its graduates jobs," Carrie Kraten, CCC TechHire Grant Director, said. "We work to connect students with employment opportunities, career coaching, job preparation support and other resources through TechHire Clackamas."

For those needing assistance paying for college, the sessions will include information on the college's TechHire grant, which provides financial assistance and support services to those who qualify. TechHire is a U.S. Department of Labor grant to help young adults ages 17-29 acquire education and training to qualify for high-demand jobs.
