    Nagy Reader

Welcome to the English Department! We offer a variety of writing and literature courses that help you with your educational goals and expand your horizons. Our course offerings include basic writing, college writing, and all genres of creative writing (see Writing Courses for the full list). We have all the standard literature survey classes, along with more specialized classes such as Comics and Literature, Introduction to Film, and Latino Literature (see English Courses).

Our eleven full-time Faculty members and twenty-some adjunct faculty come from diverse backgrounds and bring with them a wide range of skills and experiences. We have poets, fiction writers, playwrights, essayists, and bloggers. Our hobbies range from cooking, to travel, to sports. What we all have in common is a passion for sharing our love of writing and literature.

The department is known around campus for its innovative, student-centered teaching methods. We pride ourselves on encouraging students, treating them with respect, and challenging them to do their best. This is reflected in our recently adopted English Department Philosophy, which states, in part, "we keep in mind the universal application of what we teach, and we teach with a view towards students' lifelong learning. We help students be creative. We enrich their lives."

We sponsor many events and activities, including two writing clubs: the weekly CCC Writers Club and the long-running Chrysalis women writers' group. We hold public literary readings at least once a quarter, often on seasonal themes. We work with students to publish a highly-regarded national journal, The Clackamas Literary Review. And every spring we sponsor an affordable one-day writing conference, called Compose, where students and the community learn from successful local writers.

Please contact us if you would like to know more. We hope to see you in a writing or literature class soon!
