AmeriCorps Volunteers Will Boost CCC Sustainability Efforts

Thursday, November 05, 2009

Sustainability efforts at Clackamas Community College will be enhanced over the next year through the help of two AmeriCorps volunteers: Tim Maher and Martha Mitchell. The volunteers, funded in part through the college’s “Pathway to Sustainability” grant, started work at CCC in September.

Mitchell is an environmental consultant working with the college under AmeriCorps Professional Placement Program. She is a physical geographer with a professional background in water and resource protection. Her work at CCC will include preparing a detailed synopsis of CCC’s sustainability programs and activities. She will also assist in developing and implementing an energy efficiency assessment project and assist with renewable energy projects on campus. She is working with the college’s Campus Services, whose infrastructure and energy projects continue to reduce CCC's carbon footprint.

Maher will serve as the college’s sustainability outreach coordinator. His projects include conducting a baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory of the Oregon City campus and working with local green building and deconstruction consortiums. His background is in astrophysics and climate science. He is working with the college’s Customized Training and Development Services.
Both volunteers will work closely with the college’s Sustainability Committee.
