• News from our Music Department

    Dear Colleagues,
I’m writing to let you know about some exciting changes in the Clackamas Community College Music Department. After completing two comprehensive national searches with over 170 applicants, we have selected three incredible people to take over the Vocal and Instrumental Music programs.

Kathleen Hollingsworth – Director of Vocal Music

Kathleen Hollingsworth A dedicated and passionate musician, Kathleen has been immersed in music since childhood. She holds a Masters in Choral Conducting from San Francisco State University and a D. M. A. from the University of Miami.

Kathleen’s unique path has allowed her to work and study with musical giants such as Phil Mattson, Fareed Haque, Michele Weir, John Medeski, Billy Martin, Terence Blanchard, Gary Lindsay, Martin Bejerano and Rhiannon. She has extensive experience as an educator and as a professional performer (vocalist, pianist, songwriter).

As Director of Vocal Music, Kathleen leads the CCC Chamber Choir and the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble, Mainstream. She directs the CCC Vocal Jazz Festival and she teaches Music History, along with other courses in the Music Department.

Kathleen’s intentions are to continue serving humanity and to create community and beauty through music.

Lars Campbell – Director of Instrumental Music

Lars Campbell Trained in both the classical and jazz repertoires, trombonist Lars Campbell performs with the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theater orchestras; he also plays many of the national touring shows that pass through Portland. Lars has instrumental music teaching experience at both the secondary and college levels. He attended the University of Northern Colorado and Portland State University, where he received both undergraduate and masters degrees in Jazz Performance.

Lars is the co-founder of the Portland Jazz Orchestra. His discography includes appearances on Pink Martini's “Hang on Little Tomato”, Pepé and the Bottle Blondes' “Pambrosia”, and Portland Jazz Orchestra's “Good Morning, Geek”. He has also composed and arranged numerous works for large jazz ensemble, trombone quartet, and jazz sextet.

Lars directs the CCC Concert Band and the CCC Jazz Ensemble. He also directs the Concert Band Festival, the Instrumental Jazz Festival, and he teaches Midi Lab (Finale), Careers in Music, and other courses in the Music Department.

    Lisa Hanson - Strings

Lisa Hanson Lisa Hanson currently teaches Orchestra at Clackamas High School, where she has 220 students in the program. She currently plays with the Vancouver Symphony, adjudicates solo and ensemble contests, assists Gary Nelson at Clackamas Community College in the Chamber string ensemble, and conducts the Vivaldi Strings for Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Lisa received her Masters Degree from Portland State University.

We are thrilled to welcome Kathleen, Lisa, and Lars to our faculty and we are excited to watch them take these programs to new heights and to make them their own!

The retirement of Lonnie Cline, Tom Wakeling, and Dave Mills closes a chapter of over two decades of excellence in educating young people.

Here are just a few highlights:

    • vocal and instrumental ensemble student tours to Estonia, England, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Canada, and the USA
    • music and music technology students using our professional recording studios to perform, record, and produce music media
    • A long and unbroken history of strong preparation for traditional music performance, composition/theory, and music education students
    • the creation of a Digital Media Communications 2-year degree that broadens the range of “creative” careers open to music students
    • the creation of Oregon’s only state-approved Music Technology professional-technical certificate
    • the addition of Vocal Jazz, Concert Band, and Orchestra festivals, along with the CCC Instrumental Jazz Festival (over 40 years running)
    • too numerous to count: CCC music alumni working as professional musicians, music educators, producers, composers, recording engineers, music engravers, sound designers, live sound engineers, and church worship leaders

instrumentsWe wish Lonnie, Tom, and Dave well in their retirement and thank them for the tremendous impacts they made. They will remain on our faculty as part-time instructors and mentors.

Music has been designated as a “Signature Program” at CCC.

Our future looks bright; the sky is the limit! We have incredible support from our President, our School Board, and our Foundation. We have an extraordinary on-campus music faculty of 20 talented teacher/artists and we teach in a state of the art facility complete with recording studios, two electronic music labs, and great performance and rehearsal spaces.

We feel compelled to train students in a way that allows them to find success in the new (and real) world of music. Many of the professions for creative people look radically different than they did just a few years ago. We are confident that Lars and Kathleen are the right people to equip our students for success.

The Music Department offers a generous amount of scholarship funding; we have excellent performing groups and outstanding programs of study. We look forward to serving you and your students!

    Sincerely,
    Brian Rose
    Chair, Music Department
