How we support faculty
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports faculty and the college in the work of supporting and improving the hard, messy and rewarding work of teaching, learning and assessment. We work to improve faculty engagement and build community to maximize the resources of the college. Specifically, we offer:
- Faculty Development Programs (First Year Faculty Experience, Faculty Learning Communities, Assessment Coaching, etc.)
- Program and course level assessment support
- Trainings and workshops for faculty
- Consultation services (one-on-one, programs/departments, leadership, etc.)
- College-wide professional development events
- Curated resources, readings, materials, tools by request/on-demand
- Faculty-led leadership and supported advocacy in Teaching, Learning and Assessment
- And, a space for building community (usually over snacks)
We also serve a capacity-building function for the college; we help build and support the skills, knowledge, resources, tools and relationships that support and help those doing direct teaching, learning and assessment service for the college. In return, faculty contribute their knowledge and best practices back to CTL so we can share them more broadly. This collaborative work then has an exponential effect on student learning, success and retention.
The First Year Faculty Experience (FYFE) is a year-long learning, training and community-building program for all new full-time faculty members at Clackamas Community College. New full-time faculty are required to participate in the program during their first year and will be granted one course release each fall, winter and spring term to facilitate their participation (course release of 3-5 ILUs depending on departmental course credits).
Program objectives
By the end of the FYFE program, faculty should be able to:
- Articulate the vision, mission and values of CCC.
- Design, develop and deliver courses informed by the best practices of learner-centered inclusive curriculum design and instruction.
- Assess student learning using a variety of techniques aligned to the outcomes and objectives of a course.
- Describe the student community of CCC and align instructional and support strategies accordingly.
- Access and navigate CCC's organizational, communication and support systems.
- Articulate, describe and assess the role and associated expectations of a CCC instructor.
- Develop and articulate an authentic inclusive and equitable teaching approach.
- Create and nurture professional relationships within the CCC community.
