Get Ready for Winter at CCC

OREGON CITY - Start the winter gardening season off with a workshop from the Clackamas Community College Horticulture Department.

Soil test analysis and organic soil nutrition

Thursday, Jan. 10, 9-11:50 a.m.

Learn how to take a soil sample, interpret soil tests and determine soil management. Bring your soil tests to the workshop and learn how to understand them. Those without test results can also benefit from attending. Cost: $25.

Fruit tree pruning

Saturday, Feb. 2, 9-11:50 a.m.

Practice the appropriate pruning methods for a variety of fruit trees. Bring your own pruning tools and appropriate outdoor wear. Cost: $10.

Beekeeping school

Saturdays, Feb. 2 and 9, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

This workshop is intended to prepare beginning beekeepers with beekeeping knowledge, demonstrations and resources. Topics will include: basic bee biology, proper equipment, handling of bees, and hive pest and disease control. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Portland Metro Beekeepers Association. Cost: $50.

Irrigation for small farms

Thursdays, Feb. 7 and 14, 8-10:30 a.m.

This workshop will provide a foundation for small-scale farmers to make informed decisions about irrigation systems that efficiently and cost effectively supply the right amount of water to crops. Topics include: understanding water sources, selecting the right irrigation material and developing strategies for maximizing production. Cost: $30.

Beginning fruit tree grafting

Saturday, Feb. 23, 9-10:45 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 24, 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

Get hands-on practice in whip grafting fruit trees under the supervision of experienced grafters. Participants will be provided rootstock and scion wood. Bring your own straight-edge knife. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Home Orchard Society. Cost. $20.

Intermediate fruit tree grafting

Saturday, Feb. 23, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Get hands-on practice with advanced grafting methods including cleft, kerf, bark and inarching. Participants will be provided rootstock and scion wood. Bring your own straight-edge knife. Cost: $20.

Pesticide core training

Friday, Feb. 15, 1-4:50 p.m.

This training qualifies for four CORE recertification credits as required by Oregon Department of Agriculture. It fulfills the yearly recertification requirement for Private Pesticide license holders, and can be used toward the total needed for public and commercial license requirements. Cost: $40.

Pesticide laws and safety in Spanish / Plaguicidas legislación y seguridad en Español

Fridays, Feb 8-March 15, 1-4:50 p.m.

Learn the laws and regulations related to safety, handling, recordkeeping and storage of pesticides. Understand techniques for product selection, including chemical and non-chemical options, applicator safety and environmental protection included. Prepare and test for the Oregon pesticide laws and safety exam. Cost: $178.

Técnicas de selección de productos, incluyendo opciones quÌmicos y no quÌmicos, seguridad de aplicador y protección del medio ambiente incluido.
