CCC Offers Jumpstart to Those Seeking GEDs
OREGON CITY - For adults who never finished high school, returning to school to earn their GED can be intimidating. Clackamas Community College's JumpStart course helps ease adults back into the world of education.
JumpStart is a three- to five-week introduction course where skills in math and reading are assessed, whole group and one-on-one instruction is provided, and students are connected to resources within the college and the community. The course focuses on quick completion of the GED and targeted skill building, as well as an exploration of college and career opportunities.
"We work with each student to target what skills they need, what college resources can help them, what barriers we can remove, as well as help them explore future career options and what it will take to get them to reach their goals," A.J. Smith, CCC Skills Development Department Chair, said.
When students finish JumpStart, they are placed into the most appropriate class depending on their skills. Those who complete the GED test while at CCC will continue to be supported as they work to continue their education or work-related goals.
Jolynn Munsil dropped out of high school at the age of 16 after meeting her significant other and becoming a mother. After staying home with her children for 15 years, self-doubt started to creep in as to what she would do with her life. She came to CCC and enrolled in the college's GED prep classes.
Munsil said she recalled being scared on the way to her first class, but soon realized she "wasn't the oldest student, the teachers were great and many people seemed to be in the same place in life." Not only did Munsil earn her GED, but she also discovered a passion for math and numbers. Today, she is working on her accounting degree at CCC.
She said, "My education was never important to me, but this was the defining part in my life of why my education is so important to me now."
JumpStart is offered at Clackamas Community College's Oregon City campus and the Harmony campus in Milwaukie. For more information, call 503-594-3028 (Oregon City) or 503-594-6048 (Harmony).
