Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) provide immediate care to critically ill or injured people on-scene and provide transportation to hospitals, care facilities and residences. The ability to work under pressure in challenging environments, think critically to make difficult decisions independently and accurately perform life-saving skills are essential to success in this exciting career. At Clackamas Community College, students prepare through interactive classroom learning and hands-on clinical experiences.
Emergency Medical Technology CC
You will develop some exciting new skills in this program. Among these new skills, you should be able to:
- respond to injured and ill patients
- provide a thorough assessment of the patient’s condition
- put together an initial plan of care to quickly stabilize life-threatening conditions
- provide life-saving interventions
- provide safe transport for continued care
- communicate clearly and effectively with patients, and other EMS/hospital personnel
- document medical care given to patients

The Emergency Medical Technician program follows the guidelines and requirements set forth by the Oregon Health Authority (OAR 409-030-0100 to 409-030-025). In order to obtain a clinical practicum or clinical experience, students must meet the following standards and requirements set forth by the state.
Note: If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, please contact the program director for additional information. Deadlines and due dates for completing OHA requirements may vary by program.
Criminal background check
Criminal background check must be completed prior to clinical placement and no more than three months before entering the program.
Drug screen
Drug screen must be completed prior to clinical placement and no more than three months before entering the program.
TB skin test (two step) or chest x-ray
There must be documentation of one of the following:
- Two-step TB skin test or
- Quantiferon Gold blood test or
- If the results are positive, a clear Chest X-Ray (with lab report) is required
Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap)
There must be documentation the following:
- Tdap/Td booster within the past 10 years
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
There must be documentation of one of the following:
- Two vaccinations or
- Positive antibody titer (lab report required) or
- Medically documented history of disease
Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)
There must be documentation of one of the following:
- Two vaccinations or
- Positive antibody titers for all three components (lab reports required)
Hepatitis B
There must be documentation of one of the following:
- Three vaccinations or
- Positive antibody titer (lab report required)
COVID-19 (OAR 333-019-010)
- Two vaccinations Pfizer or
- Two vaccinations Moderna or
- One vaccination Johnson & Johnson
Flu Vaccine
(Recommended by OHA and required by some employers)
- Seasonal flu vaccine
BLS/CPR certification
- BLS/CPR certification is included in the EMT-101 course
It is recommended to meet with a Health Science advisor prior to applying to the program. Our advisors will help answer pre-requisite program requirements.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
- apply standard precautions in infection control during patient assessment and treatment;
- apply medical legal and ethical principals in the prehospital setting;
- quickly assess the scene and patients as to determine critical or non-critical;
- demonstrate basic life support patient care following standard scope of practice protocols;
- extricate and package patients for safe and expedient transport to an appropriate medical facility;
- give an effective verbal patient transfer report and document scene and patient information;
- demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to successfully pass Oregon licensing and National certification.

Emergency Medical Technology Application Process
EMT 03
Answer all the questions on the application and submit the application form.
Fall term
The application deadline for fall term is July 15, 2023.
Students who successfully gain admission to the program will be notified by July 20, 2023 and invited to attend an in-person orientation on the Harmony Campus scheduled to take place Aug. 7, 2023.
Winter term
The application deadline for fall term is November 11, 2023.
Students who successfully gain admission to the program will be notified by Nov. 16, 2023 and invited to attend an in-person orientation on the Harmony Campus scheduled to take place Nov. 27, 2023.
